# DMAIC Project Charter

## Template

| Field | Content | Example |
|-------|---------|---------|
| Title | Metric + process + product | Reduce bore scrap on VB-2210 |
| Business case | Why now: money, customer, strategy | Scrap and rework cost GBP 86k in FY2026; 2 complaints; plant scrap objective < 1.5% |
| Problem statement | What, where, when, how much - no cause, no solution | From Jan-Sep 2026, 3.1% of VB-2210 bodies machined on lathes 1-4 were scrapped or reworked for bore diameter outside 12.000-12.018 mm |
| Goal statement | Verb + metric + from baseline to target + by date | Reduce bore scrap and rework from 3.1% to 0.8% by 2027-04-30 |
| Customer CTQ | The requirement the project protects | Bore 12.000 +0.018 (seal leak test) |
| Primary metric | Operational definition, unit, baseline, target | Scrap + rework units / units machined at OP20, weekly |
| Secondary metric | Must not get worse | OP20 cycle time <= 94 s |
| Scope in / out | Process start and stop, products, sites, shifts | In: OP20 on lathes 1-4. Out: casting supplier, other parts |
| Team | Champion, process owner, belt, members | Ops director; machining manager; GB process engineer; setter, QE, maintenance |
| Timeline | Due date per phase with tollgate reviews | D 2026-11-20, M 12-18, A 2027-02-05, I 03-19, C 04-30 |
| Financial benefit | Hard savings, validated by finance | GBP 64k per year |

## Problem statement checklist

- Describes the **gap** between current and desired performance with numbers.
- States **where** (process, product, line) and **when** (period of the data).
- Contains **no cause** ("due to", "because of", "lack of") and **no solution** ("implement", "install").
- A reader outside the team understands why it matters.

## Goal statement

"Reduce/increase [metric] from [baseline] to [target] by [date]". A common rule for a first project is a 50%
reduction of the gap; for chronic, well-understood problems aim for the entitlement (best demonstrated performance).

## Scoping

| Too big | Right size |
|---------|------------|
| Improve plant quality | Reduce bore scrap on one part family at one operation |
| Fix supplier quality | Reduce porosity rejects from casting supplier X on housing family Y |

Green belt projects: 3-6 months, one process, team of 3-6. If the scope needs more, split it or make it a black belt
project.
